Race and Politics

News this past week includes a story about a group with the conservative-sounding title: American Renaissance. Its leader Jared Taylor prefers to be called a "white advocate." He is supporting Trump without Trump's approval as is another group of pro-whites, the American Freedom Party, that has been making robo-calls supporting the Trump campaign.

Mr Taylor is telling us he is not a white supremacist or a white nationalist. He tells us in his magazine American Renaissance that he is advocating "racial realism." He is also spokesperson of the Council of Conservative Citizens and a former director of the National Policy Institute, a Virginia-based think tank. His magazine claims,

Attempts to gloss over the significance of race or even to deny its reality only make problems worse. Progress requires the study of all aspects of race, whether historical, cultural, or biological.

Viewing history, some of us see a trend toward cultural and genetic diffusion which has increased in recent centuries with greater human mobility. Blending has been going on. And we see the bell curve applying to black populations and white populations, with some of any race smarter and more sophisticated than some others of a different race. Historically we have seen dumb whites exercising power over and humiliating people with superior mentalities.

Renaissance refers to revival, and what is it that Mr Taylor wants to revive?

The significance of race was exaggerated in the early 1900s by various intellectuals, especially in Germany (exacerbated by their defeat in the Great War of 1914-18). Since 1945 the significance of race in the minds of white people has declined. (It was more in the minds of those oppressed by white colonial rule.) The significance of race has declined in the consciousness of whites also with the end of segregation in South Africa and the United States.

Decades ago we had rights activists who supported black nationalism, but it was an idea that failed. It was impractical from a black perspective and a white perspective. How was segregation supposed to work? There would be more borders with government restrictions on movement and police activity to enforce those restrictions. Trade would have diminished and economies would have suffered.

Most of us, conservatives and liberals, see our society as benefitting from the freedoms and talents of various people. We enjoy it every day, and a small minority of politically naive racists are not going to find it easy to reverse the trend.

I've been spending too much time here on what to most of those who read this site is obvious. Let us forget about race and work on understanding what is happening to us economically and what we are doing in foreign policy.
